Our Mission is to protect the natural beauty of the Paramo which will lead us to long-term research into natural systems as part of a global effort to understand and preserve biodiversity of our planet and increase appreciation of this effort through innovative educational programs based in field studies aimed at students of all levels.
Cerro de la Muerte, also called Cerro Buenavista, is a massif 3,491 meters high that is part of the Talamanca Mountain Range, in the central mountain axis of Costa Rica, in the provinces of Cartago and San José. The place is characterized by the cold climate (1 °C to 13 °C) and the vegetation of oaks, holm oaks and moorland.
The research carried out at this Station has yielded very interesting results, such as the discovery of new species and new altitudinal distributions for many of those already known. Support for students has generated several theses to qualify for master's and doctoral degrees in the areas such as biology and forestry.
